Severn Barrage

March 2007

The latest topical issue on which I am seeking constituents' views is the potential for using the River Severn as a source of power generation. The issue is particularly topical at the moment because the Government is likely to produce a revised energy white paper in the next few months and this is therefore a crucial time if the idea is to be taken further.

My question is:

“Do you support, in principle, the idea of a barrage across the Severn in order to generate electricity?”

YOU May wish to look at the following background information:

* Click here for a fairly balanced discussion on Wikipedia, including arguments for and against, and some history;

* The Guardian and the BBC websites look at some of the arguments in favour and some possible environmental objections;

* Gloucestershire County Council website offers lots of links to paperwork and presentations at a Council symposium held late last year; (NB to download any of the presentations or submissions you probably need a broadband connection or a lot of patience!).
