Local MP Nominated for Child Poverty award

The Member of Parliament for Northavon, Steve Webb, has been shortlisted by Child Poverty Action Group for their MP of the Year award.

Steve received the nomination for his speech during the Second Reading of the Child Poverty Bill. He said parliament should consider how it can do better than reducing the proportion of children in poverty to 10% as this would still leave a million children in poverty, and added: “The goal of being about as good as the best European countries is a start, but it should not be the end of our ambitions.”

The Chief Executive of Child Poverty action Group, Kate Green OBE, said:

“Steve has a tremendous understanding of child poverty issues and there are few MPs better at getting down to the complex detail. But more than this he is a tremendous advocate of the moral case for ending child poverty in Britain.”
