MP Welcomes Tytherington Referendum Result
Northavon MP Steve Webb has welcomed the
overwhelming vote by
Tytherington residents in support of the re-opening of their village
post office. Residents were asked by the parish council for their views
on an increase of £4000 per year in the Tytherington parish precept to
contribute towards a financial package to re-open Tytherington post
office which closed in September.
The results have just been released by the parish
council and show a majority of more than 9 to 1 in favour of the
increase. Steve Webb, who has been working closely with parish leaders
and representatives of the village shop said:
"This result is a great boost to the chances of getting Tytherington
post office re-opened. Along with parish leaders I have been working
hard to put together a financial package to enable the post office to be
reopened, and local support was a vital part.
"Local residents have shown
just how much they value having a local post office. I hope that we can
now finalise our negotiations with South Gloucestershire Council and
sign off on a deal that will see this vital community service restored".
334 votes were cast in favour and 38 against, a majority of more than 9
to 1. The turnout was just under three quarters of the village at 73%.
