Steve Webb Chosen for 'Thornbury and Yate'
Northavon MP Steve Webb has been unanimously selected by local Liberal
Democrats to be their prospective candidate
for the new 'Thornbury & Yate' constituency at
the next General Election.
Under plans drawn up by the
independent Boundary Commission, local
parliamentary constituencies will be changing
at the next General Election. The current
'Northavon' constituency which Steve Webb has
represented for 10 years is being abolished.
It will be replaced by a smaller 'Thornbury & Yate'
constituency, which is the current
Northavon minus Almondsbury, Bradley Stoke
North, Pilning & Severn Beach and
Winterbourne. Those areas will
join with Bradley Stoke, Patchway, Filton and Stoke
Gifford to make a brand new 'Filton & Bradley Stoke'
constituency, whilst the remainder of South
Gloucestershire except Staple Hill and Downend (which also go into
'Filton & Bradley Stoke') will be in the new
Kingswood constituency.
Steve Webb was selected by unanimous secret ballot at the recent annual
meeting of Thornbury & Yate Lib Dems.
Speaking after the meeting, the Lib Dem MP
said:
"I am delighted to receive such an overwhelming vote of confidence from
the local team. The
campaigning work that I do depends heavily on a large team
of volunteers and I believe that we
have achieved a lot together over the last 10 years.
"It is a privilege to
represent our area, and I am therefore delighted to have been
selected as our prospective candidate for the
new 'Thornbury & Yate' constituency.
"It is where I live,
where I have my office and where my
children were born and are growing up. This is a
great part of the country and I want to
continue to make sure that the voice of local
people is heard in the corridors of power".
Steve's selection was welcomed by Mrs. Jean Capstick, who chairs the
Thornbury & Yate party. Jean Capstick said:
"Steve has been an excellent MP for our area and we are pleased that is
he is keen to
continue that work. He has built up a deservedly high
reputation for his work on behalf of
local people, but we take nothing for granted.
"We will be working hard to
ensure that the new Thornbury & Yate
constituency has a Lib Dem MP just as Northavon has had for
the last decade".
