MP Hails "Outstanding" Thornbury & Yate Result
Northavon MP Steve Webb has praised the Liberal Democrat team across the
Thornbury & Yate constituency for winning 17 of the 20 council seats up
for grabs last night, and for a clean sweep of the principal town and
parish councils in Thornbury, Yate and
Dodington.
At the next General Election,
the Northavon constituency will be abolished, and Steve Webb will be
seeking election as the MP for a new 'Thornbury & Yate" seat in which
the Lib Dems polled 55% of the votes last night - slightly up on the
General Election and on the last time these seats were fought at the
2003 Council elections.
The election in the two Frampton Cotterell wards was
delayed because of the death of one of the candidates, but this ward
also returned two Liberal Democrats last time
it was fought. In town and parish council elections,
every single Liberal Democrat candidate in Thornbury, Yate and
Dodington was successfully elected.
Steve Webb said:
"The results in the Thornbury & Yate constituency are a tremendous
tribute to the week-in, week-out hard work of
our local councillors. They deserve huge
credit for this superb result which leaves Thornbury & Yate Liberal
Democrats in excellent heart as we prepare for the next General
Election".
