Northavon MP Steve Webb has found
huge public backing
from local residents for moving ahead on using
the tidal power of the River Severn for power
generation.
The MP consulted thousands of
his constituents by e-mail and found that a
majority of 6 to 1 were in favour in principle
of a barrage or other scheme to harness the
tidal power of the Severn. Whilst residents
recognised the need to address potential environmental
concerns, the vast majority wanted a
scheme to be moved forward as a matter of
urgency. More than 1200 of those who replied
wanted a barrage or other scheme, whilst just
over 200 were opposed.
The MP has also raised the issue in a Westminster
debate, where Energy
Minister Malcolm Wicks responded, saying that
that Government has asked the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC)
to conduct a study into the use of UK tidal resources.
After the debate, Steve Webb said:
"Some of the issues on which I consult local residents result in fairly
balanced votes, but the comments on Severn
tidal power were overwhelmingly in favour.
Local people feel that the talking has gone on
long enough and now it is time for action.
"When I lead my
debate at Westminster yesterday, I
welcomed the SDC study looking into the
different options for Severn Tidal power and the
strengths and weaknesses of each.
However, I also emphasised that this must not simply be another review,
but should lead to definite action.
"With a growing recognition of
the importance of
renewable energy, this is an idea whose time has come. I
still have an open mind about exactly
what scheme should be adopted, and want to be informed by a rigorous and
swift appraisal of the options".
