Northavon MP Steve Webb has had a huge response to his online petition in support of the Macmillan Palliative Care Unit at Frenchay Hospital. On Monday (15th May) the MP launched a petition via his website to allow local people to register their support for the threatened cancer care unit. Within forty eight hours, more than 1000 local people had visited the site to register their support, with hundreds more being added every day.

The MP, who is also the health spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, said:

"I have been overwhelmed by the response to this petition. I cannot remember such a huge response to a campaign of this sort. This response shows very clearly just how much local people value the Macmillan Unit and they are determined to see it saved.

"The full list of names from my website petition will be joined with the paper-based petition campaign that is also running, and will be presented to the management at North Bristol Trust. I hope that they will understand the huge strength of feeling that has already been demonstrated and will act quickly to end the uncertainty over the Unit".
