Packed Hall at Old Sodbury Hears From Former
Liberal Leader, (Lord) David Steel

Lord Steel in conversation with Northavon MP Steve Webb
and two of the local party's newest members. L to R: Paul Harrod, Steve
Webb, David Steel, Natasha Harrod The 2005 Annual Dinner of
Northavon Liberal Democrats, held on Friday evening (14th October) at
Old Sodbury Village Hall, was visited by two major figures from the
Liberal party past and present. The guest of honour was Lord Steel of
Aikwood - better known as David Steel, the popular leader of the
Liberals up to the merger with the Social Democrats in 1988. He was
joined by Graham Watson MEP, now leader of Europe's Liberals in the
European Parliament and also the Lib Dem MEP for the South West of
England.
David Steel told a packed audience about his political career before
becoming leader of the Liberals, including his time as president of the
Anti-Apartheid movement, and also talked about the privilege of being
appointed the first Speaker of the new Scottish Parliament in 1999.
Although now retired from active politics, Lord Steel said that he was
still very much involved in international affairs, working to support
democracy in countries around the world. He said that he spoke at
relatively few public events but had accepted Steve Webb's invitation to
speak in Northavon because of his respect for the work of the local MP
in Parliament.
Speaking after the event, Steve Webb said:
"David Steel is held in huge affection both within and beyond the
Liberal movement. His speech was both amusing and inspiring and helped
us to see the way in which Liberal values have helped to transform
societies both at home and abroad".
