Lib Dems Celebrate Latest By-Election Win

Steve Webb congratulates new Town Councillor Phyllida Parsloe

Thornbury Liberal Democrats are celebrating their second town council by-election victory of the year with the election of Phyllida Parsloe to the Town Council on Thursday (22nd July). Phyllida Parsloe received 321 votes - more than half of the total cast. The Conservative candidate received 161 votes, and the Labour candidate was back in third on 83 votes. Compared with when the corresponding seat was fought at the local elections last year, this represented a significant increase in the Liberal Democrat vote share and a fall in the share gained by both Labour and the Conservatives. Phyllida Parsloe lives in Castle Street, Thornbury and was previously professor of social work and pro-vice chancellor at Bristol University.

Speaking after her election, Phyllida said:

"I would like to thank everyone who showed such confidence in me by giving me their vote last week. I am looking forward to giving back to the people of Thornbury through service on the Town Council in appreciation of all that I have gained from being part of this community over the years".

Professor Parsloe was congratulated on her victory by local MP Steve Webb who said:

"I am delighted that Phyllida has joined the hard-working Liberal Democrat team in Thornbury as a new town councillor. She will be a great asset to the Town Council and brings a wealth of experience. I look forward to working with her".
