Northavon MP Steve Webb last week joined a group of "Silver Surfers" to promote the use of computers and the internet amongst older people.

The event was hosted by the Ridings High School in Winterbourne and sponsored by Cornhill Direct as part of a nationwide "Silver Surfers Day" on 21 May. The philosophy behind the initiative is that "you are never too old to learn" about IT and everyone should be able to benefit from using the internet.

Steve Webb joined dozens of older people who were surfing the internet for subjects as diverse as genealogies, recipes and local news.  The day provided a relaxed and non-intimidating environment for people who may never have used a computer before.

The MP is well known for his interest in new technology and is keen to encourage people of all ages to get involved in breaking down the barriers of the "digital divide".
