Cinema4Yate Campaign Gathers Momentum
A campaign to get a cinema included in the blueprint for the future of
Yate shopping centre is gathering pace, with hundreds of South
Gloucestershire residents visiting the campaign web site or completing
paper surveys on their cinema-going habits. The campaign, which has been
launched by Northavon MP Steve Webb, is designed to persuade the new
owners of Yate Shopping centre, CIT Group, to give serious consideration
to a cinema as part of their medium term plans for the centre.
At present, CIT have said that they have an open mind on the issue,
and Steve Webb is now calling on local residents to demonstrate how much
they would value a cinema. The campaign web site - at
www.Cinema4Yate.com - has
already had hundreds of "hits", with the vast majority of local
residents being very enthusiastic about the plan. Comments entered on
the site so far include:
- "I think that a cinema in Yate would be a wonderful idea"
- "This is a brilliant idea. The children especially need more local
entertainment. Hope it happens."
- "I think that its good that we can get a cinema in Yate because we
don't have to travel on the bus to go all the way to Cribbs Causeway or
Longwell Green!"
- "I think this is a really good idea because kids like me and my
friends don't have anything to do at the weekends apart from hang around
on the streets."
Steve Webb said: "I have been greatly encouraged by the early response
to this campaign, and now we have to build on it. For the campaign to
succeed we need huge numbers of local people to register their support -
otherwise we will not be taken seriously.
"I hope that everyone who would like to see a cinema in Yate will
visit the web site or call my office for survey forms and take them into
offices and shops throughout the area".
The MP has printed thousands of copies of his survey form for
circulation in the local area. Copies can be obtained by calling 01454
322100 or going to the campaign
website and filling in the form online.
