No Evidence That Benefit Sanctions Work

Steve Webb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting on plans to reform the New Deal programme, said:

"Those who failed to find work in relatively prosperous times are hardest to employ frequently because many have literacy or drug problems to overcome. There is little evidence that the 'stick' approach of tougher benefit sanctions will increase employment for these people.

"The Government needs to conduct more research on the outcome of benefit sanctions before leaning heavier on a questionable policy."
