MP Pays Tribute To PC Stephen Jones
Northavon MP Steve Webb has today paid tribute to the
late PC Stephen Jones who was killed on the M4 near
Almondsbury in May 1999. At an event organised by the
Police Memorial Trust today, Steve Webb joined Prime
Minister, Tony Blair, Trust Chairman Michael Winner, and
Chief Constable Steve Pilkington along with dozens of PC
Jones former colleagues, family and friends and
others who had come to pay their respects. A memorial
stone was unveiled by the Prime Minister at Aust
Services, after which wreaths were laid.
Steve Webb, who also laid a wreath at the memorial, said
:
In recent weeks we have all been struck by the
heroism of the emergency services in New York following
the events of September 11th. But todays memorial
service was a fitting reminder that we have our own
heroes closer to home. Earlier in his career, PC Stephen
Jones has already been commended for his bravery and he
had a bright career in front of him. He selflessly gave
his life for the safety and security of our community and
I pay tribute to him and to his family.
