Residents of Oldbury-on-Severn have given enthusiastic
backing to efforts to keep Post Office services going in
the village when the existing Post Office and shop closes
shortly before Christmas. Last weekend (Saturday 25th)
local MP Steve Webb joined councillors and local
campaigners in calling from house to house to sound out
peoples views and received a very positive
response. There was some enthusiasm for keeping a village
store going, and particular commitment to maintaining a
village Post Office. Dozens of residents responded to the
survey and many indicated that they would be willing to
play a role in the campaign to preserve the Post Office.
One resident offered to help with any building
alterations which might be needed, whilst several had
ideas as to how a village store might be made more
viable. The next step will be for a meeting to be held on
Friday (December 1st) in Oldbury between a representative
of Post Office Counters, local MP Steve Webb and the
parish clerk, Bob Quinnell. Post Office Counters will be
trying to get a feel for what alternative sites might be
used in the village and to get an idea of the extent of
support among local residents.
Commenting on the survey, Steve Webb said:
I was very encouraged to see that a significant
number of Oldbury residents are keen to preserve a
village Post Office, and a number are willing to be
involved in efforts to make this a reality. I hope that
the constructive approach which has been taken by Post
Office Counters so far will be continued and that a
practical solution can be found.
